Chaperone Policy
Health Plus Pharmacy is committed to providing a safe, comfortable environment for all patients and staff. This policy outlines the availability and use of chaperones to ensure that consultations, examinations, and treatments are conducted in a manner that respects the dignity, privacy, and rights of individuals.
Purpose
The Chaperone Policy aims to:
- Protect patients and staff from any misunderstandings or allegations of improper behavior.
- Provide reassurance and support to patients during consultations and examinations.
- Uphold professional standards and ensure patient care is delivered with respect and sensitivity.
Definition of a Chaperone
A chaperone is a trained individual who observes a consultation, examination, or procedure, serving as a safeguard for both the patient and the healthcare professional. The chaperone’s role may include providing emotional support to the patient and assisting with practical aspects of the procedure.
When a Chaperone May Be Required
The Chaperone Policy aims to:
- A chaperone may be offered or requested in the following situations:
- During intimate examinations or procedures (e.g., breast, genital, or rectal examinations).
- When the patient feels vulnerable or uncomfortable.
- For consultations involving patients under the age of 18.
- At the discretion of the healthcare professional if they feel a chaperone is needed for their own protection.
Patient Rights
The Chaperone Policy aims to:
- Patients have the right to request a chaperone at any time.
- Patients may decline the presence of a chaperone, except in situations where a healthcare professional determines it is necessary for their own protection or the patient’s safety.
- Patients have the right to reschedule an appointment if a chaperone is unavailable and they feel unable to proceed without one.
Procedure
1. Offer of a Chaperone
- Patients should be informed of the option to have a chaperone present before any examination or procedure that may require one.
- Consent should be obtained before proceeding.
2. Chaperone Training
- Chaperones provided by Health Plus Pharmacy will receive appropriate training to understand their role and responsibilities.
3. Record Keeping
- The presence of a chaperone, their name, and their role during the consultation or procedure will be documented in the patient’s record.
- If the patient declines a chaperone, this should also be recorded.
4. Confidentiality
- Chaperones must maintain confidentiality and ensure that patient information is not disclosed to unauthorized individuals.
Special Considerations
1. Children and Vulnerable Adults
- A parent, guardian, or other appropriate advocate may act as a chaperone when required.
2. Cultural Sensitivities
- Where cultural or religious concerns are raised, efforts will be made to provide a suitable chaperone.
Policy Review
This policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if changes in legislation, professional guidelines, or operational practices occur.
